Rainy today. But, we discovered a Medicine Hat that really surprised us! Its a much larger city than we thought - population of about 60,000. First we found St. Patrick Catholic Church, whose image adorns all the marketing pieces. We weren't able to see the sanctuary but we had a nice visit with Hazel, the church secretary. She turned us onto the Worlds Largest Tepee, the visitor center there which turned us onto the Medalta Pottery Museum.
The Tepee was originally located at the Calgary Winter Olympics of 1988. A wealthy "Hat" businessman decided rather than dismantle it, it should be moved to Medican Hat. Its the feature of a park. It honors the local indigenous population.
Then our GPS took us all over finally to an industrial area and the Medalta Potteries Kilns, in the historic Clay District. The company was in business from 1922 to 1954. There is still some independent work going on there. The feature, however, was an amazing collection of Medalta pottery that a guy named Tony Schlachter had collected over the years. Anything from large pottery jugs to sets of dinner ware for hotel chains.
