First stop this morning was at the local "Superstore" for odd items. Like a giant Wal-Mart or Fred Meyer. Then drove about an hour to Moose Jaw. Thanks to our waitress last night, we knew to look for the "Tunnels of Moose Jaw". Turns out, its a major tourist attraction. We did one of three underground tours offered called "Bunker24". We actually went underground to (supposedly) a 1950's command center for agents working to warn the country of the Red Scare of Communism, big bombs, etc. Quite clever and, I suppose, it was all true!
Moose Jaw is a big, old city. The streets are terrible. But like many other towns these days, the outskirts are booming with hotels, eateries, apartment complexes, traffic! We also found the curiosity called Mack the Moose, the largest moose in the world (competing with one in Norway). Light lunch at Tim Horton's next door.
We continued on Route 1, the Trans Canada Highway, for another 200+ miles to Medicine Hat, Alberta. Initially, the land was flat, flat, flat but lucious farmland of wheat, oats, canola, beans, etc. As we approached MH the land became more rolling, with more cattle ranching. An occasional oil well. We also noted a little bit of irrigiation for the first time (pivots). The road is pretty good, although rough in places. Speed limit is 110k/h. We note there are no rest areas, like we have in the US. Very little traffic. Weather is fair, temps in the mid 70s.
We also came across a place called Chapin Lake. Its a salt marsh and mining operation along with a shore-bird sanctuary. The "visitor center" is supported by the mining company, Saskatchewan Minerals. one of the country's largest producers of sodium sulfate.
We arrived in MH by about 6:00 to a nearly new Best Western. Dinner at Denny's in the hotel.
